Hair is the crowning glory for men and women. Everybody wants healthy and lustrous hair, for that you need to take care of it too. But sometimes in our quest to beautiful hair, we often do things that damages it. Hair that is damaged becomes fragile and tends to break easily. It is normal for a person to shed 50 – 100 strands every day, according to American Academy of Dermatology. If it exceeds this number, it is important to know the reasons. It is best to visit a dermatologist to know the root of the problem.

There are many reasons for hair fall. Few of them are

  • Hereditary Hair loss – This is the most common cause of hair loss that happens with aging. This condition is called androgenic alopecia, male and female pattern baldness. If you have baldness in your family history then you are likely to have this type of hair loss.
  • Hormonal Changes and Medical Conditions – Temporary or permanent hair loss can happen due to hormonal changes such as during pregnancy, child birth and menopause. Medical conditions that causes hair loss are thyroid, alopecia areata that is an auto immune disease which causes patchy hair loss and scalp infections such as ringworm.
  • Medication – Hair loss can also be due to the side effects of medications used to treat depression, arthritis, heart problems and cancer.
  • Stress – Sometimes due to stress we lose hair, but this is temporary. Try managing your stress levels and your hair will regrow back in few months.
  • Vitamins and Minerals Deficiency – A diet low in iron, protein and other nutrients can lead to hair fall.
  • Hair Styles and Treatments – Due to excessive hair styling, especially that pull your hair tight and puts pressure on follicles causes a type of hair loss called traction alopecia.
  • Weight Loss – Hair loss usually happens after a drastic weight loss. This happens due to the fluctuation in the body mass index which causes physical stress that signals the hair follicles to move to inactive stage. Hence, the weight loss must be gradual and healthy.

Now let’s see the solutions to hair loss which are many but first thing is to get an appointment with your dermatologist. The doctor will examine your medical and family history, also ask you about your diet and hair care routine. You might also have to do tests such as blood test or pull test. There are effective treatments for some types of hair loss where you can reverse or at least slow down your hair loss. Depending on your hair loss, the doctor will advise you the treatments which could be medication, surgery or simple life style changes.

Medication – If your hair loss is due to some underlying disease then treatment of that disease will be necessary. If your hair fall is due to some medication then you need to take the doctor’s advice. There are medications which can treat hereditary baldness, the most common options are Minoxidil and Finasteride. Do not self-medicate, always take the advice of a doctor.

Surgery – Hair Transplant or restoration surgery is done to add more hair to the area of your head where there is bald spot or hair thinning. It is done by removing your hair from thicker parts of the scalp and grafting it to the thinning or balding section of the scalp.

Life Style Changes – By following a healthy lifestyle one can improve the quality of hair and reduce hair fall.

  1. Healthy Eating – Diet plays an important role in the strength and health of a person’s hair. Eating a healthy diet rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals helps promote healthy hair and reduces hair fall. Hair is made up of protein, so try to add foods rich in protein such as lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, etc. Deficiency in Vitamin D can cause hair fall and hair thinning, address this deficiency to reverse the effect. Nutrients such as iron, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, B,C and E are also important for hair growth.
  2. Mild Shampoo – Use shampoo suitable for your hair type and see that it is mild and gentle. You can opt for herbal shampoos or sulphate free shampoo.
  3. Conditioner – Condition your hair after shampoo to make it soft and manageable. Conditioners coat the strands of hair to reduce breakage and split ends.
  4. Hair styling methods – Limit the use of heating and drying procedures as it will weaken your hair. Let your hair dry naturally rather than using a blow dryer. Do not tie your hair tightly backwards in a bun or pony tail as this can lead to hair loss.
  5. De-stress – Studies have found that stress is linked with hair loss. De-stress yourself by doing meditation or do things that make you happy and relaxed.
  6. Oiling your hair – Applying oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil and castor oil before washing your hair can deep treat your hair to be strong and shiny. Keep the oil for an hour or two and wash your hair, do not keep it for long or overnight as it can lead to skin issues.
